A robust customer relationship management platform (CRM) is the bread and butter of nonprofit success. In fact, nonprofit CRM platforms are so widely used that the market size was valued at $4.25B in 2024 and is projected to surpass $7.3B by 2031.

However, despite its crucial role in donor management and fundraising, CRM software can become expensive quickly. That’s why free or low-cost options are often a nonprofit’s best bet.

In this guide, we’ll share what nonprofit CRM features to look for so that you can compare tools and find the best fit for your organization. Plus, we’ve done a deep dive into the top free CRMs for nonprofits to see what they offer—and how “free” they really are.

What to look for in a free nonprofit CRM

Not all free nonprofit CRM software is created equal. When choosing the right donor management software for your organization, keep an eye out for these key features:

  • Donor segmentation 💰 Does the CRM make it easy to filter, sort, and search your donor data?
  • Easy imports and exports 💻 Can you bulk import contacts and transactions and export the data you need in a useful format?
  • Integrations ⚒️ Does the platform have built-in fundraising tools? Can it integrate seamlessly with other platforms your nonprofit already uses?
  • Customization 🎨 Does the CRM system offer custom fields, tags, filters, and notes to help you manage donor relationships effectively?
  • Detailed contacts 👤 Can you create personalized donor profiles with timelines, activity tracking, and year-end reports?
  • Data hygiene 🧼 Does the system offer tools like de-duplication and data validation to keep your records accurate?
  • Unlimited capacity 🚀 Can you import and create as many contact profiles as you need?

1. Givebutter: Best all-around CRM for nonprofits

Givebutter is the all-in-one fundraising platform that brings together everything changemakers need to fuel their missions, including a built-in nonprofit CRM. And, like all of the platform’s core fundraising features, Givebutter’s CRM is free, no matter how many contacts you have.

Screenshot of Givebutter's CRM tool

💰 Is it really free? Yes! Thanks to optional tips from donors, nonprofits can raise funds with donation forms, pages, and events, import unlimited contact records, create donor segments, and send personalized emails at no cost—all in one place.

📣 Standout features:

🔥 Our take: We’re not just buttering ourselves up here. Givebutter is one of the highest-rated donor management systems on G2, based on user satisfaction. With an extensive suite of free features that work together seamlessly, Givebutter helps changemakers focus on what really matters—making the world a butter place.

Build better donor relationships with a free CRM

What users like about Givebutter

I think whether you're a small org like us or a larger org, the capabilities are there for you, and you should STRONGLY consider this. We looked at much larger CRM/donation platform companies that charged a lot more, and I am so happy we went with Givebutter. Not too much, not too little... JUST RIGHT!! — Emily G., Givebutter user

What users dislike about Givebutter

One potential con to Givebutter is that their extensive feature set and customization options can have a learning curve for new users who may not be familiar with online fundraising platforms. It might take some time and effort to fully explore and utilize all the available tools and functionalities. Michelle P.,  Givebutter user

2. Givelify: For AI analytics and tools

Givelify provides donor management tools for both nonprofit organizations and their donors. On the nonprofit side, it offers a CRM with built-in analytics, insights, and key integrations.

For donors, the Givelify app is built to help users search for nonprofits, give easily, and centralize all their philanthropic efforts.

Despite being free, however, Givelify’s CRM has limited customization capabilities and fewer integrations than competitors.

Screenshot of Givelify's CRM tool

💰 Is it really free? Yes! This minority-owned FinTech-for-Good company does not charge any sign-up or platform fees. The only cost to organizations is the standard payment processing fee of 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction.

📣 Standout features:

  • Custom donor profiles
  • AI-powered donor insights (Givelify Analytics Studio)
  • Built-in donor messaging

🔥 Our take: Givelify’s best CRM features are its AI-driven analytics and insights tools, making it a great option for organizations that want to supercharge their donor analysis.

However, as far as free CRMs for nonprofits go, Givelify falls short of some basic features: limited payment methods, lack of customizations, and few integration capabilities, which can restrict organizations needing a more flexible CRM.

What users like about Givelify

The best part about Givelify is that it is super easy to use. If you can send a text, you can use Givelify and donate to your charity of choice (or place of worship). It's that simple! — Dennis S., Givelify user

What users dislike about Givelify

My church is charged a fee for accepting the payments, and there is no way that I can pay the fee separately to ensure the church receives the full offering. — Belinda P., Givelify user

3. Bitrix24: For volunteer management

Though Bitrix24 isn’t built exclusively for nonprofits, it offers e-commerce tools and features that are geared towards charities, like its free CRM for nonprofits. From grant management to campaign organization, Bitrix24 is a basic solution for nonprofits looking to consolidate their data in one place.

Screenshot of Bitrix24's CRM tool

💰 Is it really free? Yes! Bitrix24 pricing includes paid plans and one unlimited free plan specifically for nonprofits—no platform or processing fees are listed.

📣 Standout features:

  • Volunteer management and coordination
  • Contact management
  • Project and team task management
  • Built-in communication channels

🔥 Our take: While Bitrix24’s free CRM is useful, it’s not specifically designed for nonprofits, meaning it lacks some fundamental features like customization capabilities and segmentation. Plus, free users don’t have access to data hygiene tools, analytics, contact exports, and integration with marketing and engagement tools.

What users like about Bitrix24

It has a very good user experience, super intuitive and functional, easy to learn for both users and administrators. Its integration and implementation are very simple! — Yamile O., Bitrix24 user

What users dislike about Bitrix24

While functional, Bitrix24's visual design can feel a bit dated compared to some of its more modern competitors. The use of icons, color schemes, and layout don't always align with the clean and streamlined aesthetic users have become accustomed to. Mohamed H., Bitrix24 user

4. Salesforce NonProfit Success Pack: For organizations already using Salesforce

Salesforce is one of the most well-known names in sales and CRM software. Their NonProfit Success Pack (NPSP), specifically designed for charities, offers extensive functionality, including access to a 360-degree view of fundraising efforts, detailed donor insights, real-time reports, and an intuitive dashboard.

Screenshot of Salesforce NonProfit Success Pack's CRM tool

‍💰 Is it really free? Yes, 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) nonprofits in the U.S. are eligible for up to 10 free licenses for the Nonprofit Success Pack.

📣 Standout features:

  • AI-powered insights
  • Detailed donor insights
  • Access to other Salesforce tools
  • Robust reporting and analytics

🔥 Our take: While Salesforce offers powerful CRM tools, users report a steep learning curve, increased fees as nonprofits scale, and hard-to-reach customer service. It’s ideal for large organizations that want the power of Salesforce, already have a handle on their donor information, and don’t mind taking the time to learn the platform.

What users like about Salesforce

Salesforce Sales Cloud is a powerful, all-in-one CRM that helps businesses streamline sales processes, improve productivity, and drive revenue growth. One of its standout features is its AI-powered automation, which makes lead management, forecasting, and pipeline tracking incredibly efficient. — Assay Poulose P., Salesforce user

What users dislike about Salesforce

High Cost – Salesforce Sales Cloud is one of the most expensive CRM solutions on the market. The pricing model, with additional costs for add-ons and premium features, can be overwhelming for small and mid-sized businesses. — Assay Poulose P., Salesforce user

5. Funraise: For donor-facing tools

Funraise is a user-friendly fundraising platform designed to help organizations scale and successfully manage donor relationships. While it offers strong CRM features, its pricing requires a custom quote based on how many features you need.

Screenshot of Funraise's CRM tool

‍💰 Is it really free? Funraise offers donor-covered fees so that nonprofits aren’t saddled with platform fees, but you’ll need to reach out for a custom quote.

📣 Standout features:

  • Household management
  • Interaction tracking
  • Donor segmentation
  • Donor portfolios
  • Donor-facing app

🔥 Our take: Funraise offers solid CRM features, including robust segmentation and filters. What sets it apart is its unique tools, like donor portfolios and a donor-facing app. However, with pricing hidden behind a custom quote, it’s unclear how much nonprofits will actually pay.

What users like about Funraise

Funraise keeps a fantastic CRM of all of our donors, including a breakdown of net worth, potential to donate, which campaign they donated to, where they are in the world, etc. All of this information helps us make decisions on where to focus our ad money and how our donors are finding us. — Melissa Y., Funraise user

What users dislike about Funraise

The functionality is limited, we could not accept crypto or stock donations. There was no option for a donor portal or peer 2 peer fundraising. Reporting could be improved significantly. Integration with our CRM did not work well due to limited form customization options. Verified Funraise user

6. DonorDock: For data importing assistance

DonorDock helps nonprofits streamline and organize their fundraising and donor data in one central place. Sleek and intuitive, users report strong functionality and little to no glitches or bugs.

While DonorDock offers secure data and donor management, access to its full suite of CRM features comes at a hefty price.

Screenshot of DonorDock's CRM tool

💰 Is it really free? No, DonorDock does not offer a free plan. All users must subscribe to a paid tier. DonorDock does not charge platform fees, but they do charge processing fees, which donors can cover.

When donating, supporters are asked to cover 5% + $0.30 of their transaction. If they choose to cover these fees, DonorDock will give 2.2% + $0.30 to the charity to cover their Stripe processing fees.

📣 Standout features:

  • Unlimited contacts
  • Task management
  • Integrations
  • Free training and support

🔥 Our take: DonorDock is a good option for new nonprofits that need a simple CRM that offers access to data importing assistance, live training, and more. But, like many competitors, this tool isn’t really free—nonprofits need to pay for a subscription to unlock its full suite of integrations and CRM features.

What users like about DonorDock

The pricing of DonorDock is much more reasonable than other CRMs out there. I think DD is an excellent choice for MOST nonprofits out there, especially those who are working with limited budgets and smaller teams. — Mathew C., DonorDock user

What users dislike about DonorDock

DonorDock lacks some of the more in-depth reporting tools found on other CRMs. The platform can also be a bit laggy or buggy at times. Mathew C., DonorDock user

7. Bloomerang: For advanced features

Bloomerang is a cloud-based donor management software solution designed specifically for nonprofits. The platform offers high-level CRM tools like an interactive dashboard, donor histories, marketing automation, and in-depth reports.

Screenshot of Bloomerang's CRM tool

‍💰 Is it really free? No. Bloomerang pricing is based on the number of records you have, starting at $125/month.

📣 Standout features:

  • Wealth screening
  • Unlimited user access
  • Donor engagement scoring
  • Zapier integration
  • Open API
  • Data hygiene tools

🔥 Our take: Bloomerang’s integrations and inclusion of advanced features like wealth screening and engagement scoring make it a good nonprofit CRM for many organizations. Given the price, however, Bloomerang is less accessible for smaller, grassroots organizations.

What users like about Bloomerang

With very little training, I was able to operate the CRM to effectively provide information to our board, report to many donors, track our grants, and follow our track towards meeting our goals. — B. Sean N., Bloomerang user

What users dislike about Bloomerang

Customer service is quite slow and uneven. Sometimes it's excellent, sometimes it's average, and a few times it was very bad. Verified Bloomerang user

8. Neon One: For hands-on customer support

Neon One is a widely used fundraising software that offers a robust CRM alongside powerful tools like peer-to-peer fundraising, event management, donor engagement tracking, and more.

Screenshot of Neon One's CRM tool

‍💰 Is it really free? No. Neon One’s pricing plans range from $99–$399+/month, depending on your nonprofit's revenue and required features and integrations.

📣 Standout features:

  • Custom fields
  • User-friendly dashboard
  • Engagement timeline
  • Pre-built and custom reporting
  • Radius search tools

🔥 Our take: When choosing the best nonprofit CRM, nonprofits should consider the customer support resources available to them. Neon One provides product training and other resources but does not provide 24/7 support for all users.

What users like about Neon One

I find the number of features to be the biggest strength, which contributes to how frequently my company uses Neon CRM. We had an easy implementation and integration to our system with strong customer support. Overall, it's also easy to use. — Cleo P., Neon One user

What users dislike about Neon One

One of the most disappointing things I have encountered with Neon CRM is that I have messaged their customer support several times in my year of having it, and their response time has been quite slow, sometimes I have had to send another message a week later to get a response. — Verified Neon One user

9. Bonterrra: For pledge management

Since acquiring EveryAction, Network for Good, Salsa Labs, GiveGab, and several other nonprofit software platforms, Bonterra has amassed a large menu of fundraising and donor management solutions. While the platform offers solid functionality, pricing isn’t listed publicly—meaning you'll need to talk to a sales rep to get a quote.

Screenshot of Bonterrra's CRM tool

‍💰 Is it really free? No. Bonterra is a paid platform, and pricing is not publicly available. This lack of transparency can be frustrating for smaller orgs trying to budget ahead of time.

📣 Standout features:

  • Interactive dashboard
  • Automated data hygiene tools
  • Personalized coaching (additional fee)
  • Pledge management
  • Fundraising pages and donor tracking

🔥 Our take: Bonterra is best suited for nonprofits that are comfortable requesting a custom quote and investing in a la carte paid features. If your organization is looking for a free, all-in-one CRM that includes donation forms, events, and donor engagement tools without hidden costs, platforms like Givebutter might be a better fit.

What users like about Bonterra

The CRM/Database software is extremely user-friendly. Great design and great features. The customer support has been excellent as well. — Steven N., Bonterra user

What users dislike about Bonterra

The functionality of the Fundraising Campaigns is limited, and there are quite a few glitchy issues that have not been resolved when I've reached out to customer support. Verified Bonterra user

10. Virtuous: For donor forecasting

Virtuous is trusted by organizations of all sizes to help keep donor data updated and organized. Plus, they offer email and communication tools, volunteer mobilization features, and more.

Screenshot of Virtuous's CRM tool

‍💰 Is it really free? Virtuous lists a few plans on their website, but nonprofits need to reach out to the Virtuous Sales team for a custom quote.

📣 Standout features:

  • Task automation
  • Donor forecasting
  • Custom gift ask pipeline
  • Suggested gift asks
  • Best next-call reporting

🔥 Our take: One of Virtuous CRM’s standout features is its futuristic automation and prediction tools. For organizations looking to speed up their workflows and reduce friction, Virtuous might be worth checking out.

What users like about Virtuous

Our organization really enjoys the Donor Stewardship opportunities and possibilities of Virtuous, being able to create automation and having multiple pathways of connecting to all donors in our CRM truly helps build relationships with donors that may be overlooked or are simply slipping through the cracks. — Stephanie C., Virtuous user

What users dislike about Virtuous

Reporting can sometimes be a challenge. We have to export, then manipulate data to get the data we are looking for. Paul S., Virtuous user

11. DonorPerfect: For integrations

Like many other nonprofit CRMs, DonorPerfect offers more than just a place to house detailed donor profiles. This software solution includes fundraising event functionality, donation forms, and some pretty sweet automation tools.

Screenshot of DonorPerfect's CRM tool

‍💰 Is it really free? DonorPerfect doesn’t list any of its pricing publicly.

📣 Standout features:

  • Extensive integrations
  • Automated monthly giving options
  • DonorPerfect mobile app
  • Custom filters

🔥 Our take: For organizations that rely on other software solutions they don’t want to part with, DonorPerfect is a great fit. With seamless integrations like Constant Contact and Quickbooks, nonprofits can bring all their tools into one place and simplify their workflow.

What users like about DonorPerfect

DonorPerfect is an easy-to-use CRM platform with many customization options. Chat support has been very helpful with any questions that we had. — Courtney B., DonorPerfect user

What users dislike about DonorPerfect

I think that the reports and user profiles are difficult to navigate. There are too many fields making it hard to maintain. Verified DonorPerfect user

How to choose the best nonprofit CRM for your organization

Now that you’ve got several great CRM platforms to consider, you’re probably wondering how to narrow down your options. Here’s what you need to consider when comparison shopping for the best nonprofit CRM:

Priorities ✅

When thinking about your CRM needs, take into account both your short-term and long-term organizational goals and must-have features. This will make the shopping process smoother and help you focus on what matters most to your organization.

Users 👤

Consider the people that will be interacting with the CRM, including:

  • Team members: How many people will use the CRM? How much technical expertise do they have? Which team members will use your CRM the most, and how comfortable are they with new technology?
  • Donors: What does the donor-facing side of the software look like? Is it user-friendly and intuitive?

Existing tools ⚒️

Before jumping into a new software solution, audit your current tools. How many can you integrate or replace with the CRM system you’re considering?

Budget 💰

Generally, the more contacts you need to store and the more features you need, the more expensive your plan will be. Before creating an account or pressing “buy,” make sure to consider these potential fees:

  • Monthly costs: Many nonprofit CRMs charge an annual or monthly fee based on your annual revenue or the number of contacts you manage. While this amount is often listed on a CRM’s pricing page, it may not be the total you’ll pay for the platform—the cost of additional features can add up, plus additional fees.
  • Platform or payment processing fees: If you’re using your CRM to accept donations, you may be charged platform or payment processing fees for each transaction. Some fundraising platforms, like Givebutter, let your donors opt to cover these costs, ensuring your nonprofit has the opportunity to receive 100% of each donation.
  • Setup and training: Many CRM vendors offer a couple of free setup and training sessions. However, if you think you’ll need more support, ask whether there are additional charges for extra support.
  • Data migration: Software vendors may help you migrate your data from another CRM or spreadsheet. However, this service usually has a flat-rate or hourly fee.
  • Number of constituents: CRM plans typically include a set number of contacts and charge a small fee per additional contact. Make sure you choose a CRM that can accommodate a large number of donor profiles if needed.
  • Number of users: The number of users, locations, or devices your organization has can also affect the final price of your CRM.

Customization and personalization needs 🎨

The best CRMs for nonprofits will help you craft messages that feel unique and tailored to your donors. Look for CRMs that offer features like custom segments, filters, notes, tags, fields, reports, and dashboards.

As Fundraising Expert Mallory Erickson says:

[Personalization, like segmenting,] allows us to meet donors where they're at. This means recognizing how they came into our organization in the first place and speaking to them based on the alignment that exists between them and our organization.

Extras ✨

Each CRM for nonprofit organizations is different. Some are specifically designed for a few niche purposes, while others cover a broader range of tasks. When comparing nonprofit CRMs, you might come across tools for:

  • Donor management: Organize contact details, track donor giving history and interactions, and generate detailed reports
  • Donation management and fundraising: Tools for accepting payments, tracking donations, and monitoring the entire fundraising process
  • Grant management: Research potential grants and help you track the grant application process
  • Event management: Sell tickets and host virtual, in-person, or hybrid events
  • Volunteer management: Recruit, schedule, and coordinate volunteers
  • Advocacy efforts: Communicate with key individuals and groups
  • Program management: Monitor programs and allocate donations effectively
  • Customer support: Access dedicated support staff for assistance when needed
  • Integrations: Sync with email marketing software, a fundraising platform, text-to-donate tools, and more

Before starting your CRM research, think about where your organization is headed and how your fundraising CRM will help you achieve your goals. It’s up to you to decide which of these features are essential for your organization or simply nice to have.
